LIFE WAS SWEET
DOWN SOUTH BY THE SEA
EMERALD WATERS
RED AUTUMN LEAVES
BUT WE COULD BE
IN ENGLAND NOW
LIKE A BIRD
I FIGURED IT OUT
WE COULD FLY
FROM HERE TO LONDON
ONE THOUSAND MILES
TO FIND A NEW PLACE TO HIDE
BUT IF I COULD FLY
TO STAVANGER
I’D JUMP FROM A CLIFF
AND FLOAT OVER THE GULLS
OF THE NORTHERN SEA
FACELESS SHAPELESS
WAS THE HUMAN BOMB
HOW COULD EVERYONE
BE SO NUMB?
BUT WE COULD SWIM
IN THE OCEAN NOW
LIKE A FISH
I FIGURED IT OUT
THOUGH THERE’S NO THAUMATURGE ODIN
TO UNBURN THIS WASTELAND
AND MAKE LIFE SPRING AGAIN
YET IF I COULD BECOME A SAILOR
THIS BOAT WOULD BE HOME
AND EVERYWHERE ON THE SEVEN SEAS
I’D ROAM
THE GREED OF MAN
THE WAR THE LAND
THE WEEPING MOTHERS
ON THE STRAND
IF ONLY WE COULD TRY
AND UNDERSTAND

Though only their third studio album release, these veterans have been around for almost fifteen years--and they keep getting better with each release--which is hard to manage since their quality of compositions, performances, and production have always been top notch. A band that really should be heard! wafiii

This release makes me think of early delving from folk groups into jazz territory, with some Canterbury thrown in, The quartet really captures an era without falling into sentimentality, sounding like a lost soundtrack some mod 60s film at times. Airy, spiraling, effected vocals blend with what sound like vintage keyboards, guitars, bass, drums and flute for a lysergic trip back in time. Nickie Harte Kelly
