WAVES RAIN AND A SOFT BREEZE
LIKE A LEAFLESS TREE
WATER WASHED THE KEEL
I PULLED MY FISHING NET
OUT OF THE SEA
AND IT WAS EMPTY
SAW A GOLD FISH
IN THE BLACK SEA
(I HAVE TO KEEP
ALL THE GOLD FISH FOR ME)
I WILL SELL WATER
’TIL THE RIVERS RUN DRY
(AND BUILD A CASTLE
AS HIGH AS THE SKY)
MY HEART WAS FULL OF GREED
NO BAIT LEFT FOR ME
NO FLESH TO LURE THE FISH
I SAW A LONELY WOMAN ON THE SHORE
WITH NOWHERE LEFT TO GO
NO CARE IN THIS WORLD
NO MORE GOLD FISH
IN THE BLACK SEA
I KILLED A WOMAN
AND THE RIVERS RAN DRY
(MY CASTLE CRUMBLES TO DUST
AS I DIE)

Though only their third studio album release, these veterans have been around for almost fifteen years--and they keep getting better with each release--which is hard to manage since their quality of compositions, performances, and production have always been top notch. A band that really should be heard! wafiii

This release makes me think of early delving from folk groups into jazz territory, with some Canterbury thrown in, The quartet really captures an era without falling into sentimentality, sounding like a lost soundtrack some mod 60s film at times. Airy, spiraling, effected vocals blend with what sound like vintage keyboards, guitars, bass, drums and flute for a lysergic trip back in time. Nickie Harte Kelly
